  • Overview

    Responsible for assisting with supervising and coordinating laboratory services.

    Responsibilities

    Department Management

    • Maintains 24 hour accountability for department, making independent decisions to implement strategies and programs to improve patient care.
    • Delegates authority and accountability, when appropriate, to Lead Techs and staff to ensure optimal outcomes and staff engagement.
    • Evaluates effectiveness of unit/department based programs and processes to ensure optimal outcomes.

    Staffing

    • Manages the unit/department effectively in regards to staffing and staff supervision.

    Role Specific Responsibilities

    • Is knowledgeable about all testing and operational activities in areas of responsibility.
    • Able to trouble shoot and problem solve operational issues
    • Develops and maintains appropriate policies and procedures for section and department.
    • Coordinates hiring process in areas of responsibility.
    • Responsible for documentation required for all staff, to appropriately maintain personnel files.
    • Supports and communicates Laboratory initiatives and philosophies.
    • Coordinates departmental orientation, training and teaching activities.
    • Works with Manager to establish and review departmental capital and operating budgets.
    • Coordinates competency activities within department including initial training, 6 month competency and annual competency, as required by SIH and accrediting organization.
    • Serves as Subject Matter Expert (SME) for laboratory procedures, processes and instruments.
    • Works with other departments using Lean processes to improve patient care.
    • Participates in Lean activities and promotes Lean process improvement within the department and encourages staff participation in Lean Daily Management.
    • Responsible for staff scheduling in area of responsibility per hospital and department policy.
    • Maintains and reviews all required records, reports, statistics, logs, files and other documents as required.
    • Maintains confidentiality with respect to all employee information.
    • Maintains appropriate privacy and confidentiality of all patient information.
    • Maintains and documents continuous readiness for accreditation surveys.
    • Is familiar with and meets all regulatory standards for the handling and performance of proficiency testing.
    • Ensures that all laboratory charges are posted in a timely fashion and periodically reviews/audits charges to ensure accuracy of laboratory bills.

    Qualifications

    Bachelor's degree in related field required.

    MLT/MLS, MT (ASCP) or equivalent required.

    Three years of Lab experience required.
