Under supervision of an RN preceptor, the student nurse extern gains experiences and confidence in providing nursing care in a hospital setting.

 

Responsibilities

Role Specific Responsibilities

  • Under supervision of an RN preceptor, assesses patients to determine mental, physical, and spiritual needs
  • Documents completely, timely, and accurately in the medical record
  • Establishes a compassionate environment to provide emotional, psychological, and spiritual support to patients and families
  • Under supervision of an RN preceptor, provides health teaching and counseling to promote, attain, and maintain the optimum health level of patients
  • Under the supervision of an RN preceptor, serves as an advocate for the patient by communicating and collaborating with other health service professionals
  • Under supervision of an RN preceptor, assesses, plans, implements and evaluates an individual plan of care in collaboration with the multidisciplinary health care team
  • Demonstrates ability to use clinical judgement in conjunction with critical thinking to recognize, act upon, and report changes in patient condition
  • Serves as an advocate for the patient by communicating and collaborating with other health service personnel
  • Exhibits self-directed growth by seeking educational opportunities to improve knowledge and skills

Qualifications

Education

  • Enrollment in an accredited ADN or BSN program

Licenses and Certification

  • Must be a student in good standing in an accredited nursing program and has successfully completed a nursing arts course (e.g., Basics in Nursing, Fundamentals in Nursing, Nursing 101, etc.)
  • BLS

Experience and Skills

  • Technical Experience:  NA
  • COVID Vaccinations
